Shopify has announced the deprecation of storefront script tags. This article explains what this means, how it affects the Awin Shopify App, and what you need to do to keep your tracking working.
What is Shopify’s script tag deprecation and how does it affect Awin tracking?
Shopify has announced the deprecation of storefront script tags, which have historically allowed apps to inject JavaScript onto storefront pages without requiring any theme changes.
Two important deadlines apply:
1 October 2026: Apps can no longer create or update script tags. Existing script tags will continue to run.
1 March 2027: Shopify will completely stop injecting script tags into storefronts. Any functionality relying on a storefront script tag will stop working.
The Awin app uses script tags in the storefront functionality that supports several important features, including server-to-server tracking, MasterTag plugins and reporting. As a result, this change directly affects parts of the current Awin Shopify integration.
To stay compliant with Shopify’s requirements, we have updated our Shopify App by introducing an Awin app embed. This moves storefront functionality currently handled by script tags into the app embed.
How app installation will change
Following Shopify’s recommendation to replace storefront script tags with app embed blocks, Awin is introducing the Awin Tracking App Embed from version 5.5.0 onwards. You should first make sure you’re using the latest version of the Awin Shopify App, then enable Awin Tracking in your live Shopify theme.
Deadlines: what you need to know
Advertisers who installed the Awin Shopify App before 1 October 2026
If you already have the Awin Shopify App installed, you need to update to the latest version and enable the app embed before 1 March 2027.
After 1 March 2027, Shopify will stop injecting storefront script tags. Advertisers who haven’t completed the update will experience loss of server-to-server tracking, partner plugins and reporting.
Advertisers who install the Awin Shopify App after 1 October 2026
From 1 October 2026 onwards, Shopify will prevent the creation of new script tags. Any newly installed version of the Awin Shopify App must therefore use the app embed implementation. If the app embed isn’t enabled, the implementation will be incomplete.
FAQ
Do I need to take action if my Awin Shopify App is already installed?
Yes. Although existing script tags will continue working until 1 March 2027, you’ll need to update to the new version of the Awin Shopify App and enable the app embed before Shopify removes script tag support completely.
What happens if I install the app but don’t enable the app embed?
Your tracking setup will be incomplete. Server-to-server tracking, journey tracking and any MasterTag-related features such as partner plugins will not function.
Why can’t Awin continue using script tags?
Shopify is deprecating storefront script tags platform-wide. From 1 October 2026, apps can no longer create or update script tags, and from 1 March 2027 Shopify will stop injecting them into storefronts entirely. This change applies across all API versions.
Does this affect ShareASale advertisers?
The ShareASale Shopify App doesn’t provide server-to-server tracking so it’s not impacted. We advise all ShareASale advertisers to upgrade to the Awin Shopify App for:
Less manual effort with automatic order validation.
Product data feeds that support Google Shopping formats.
Fewer missed sales with server-to-server tracking.
