Affiliate marketing explained
Affiliate marketing is a performance‑based model where partners (also known as affiliates) help drive customers to your brand and products. Here’s how it works:
A partner promotes a brand or product.
A customer clicks the partner’s link and visits your website.
The customer completes a purchase or takes a qualifying action, such as filling in a form or downloading a brochure.
The partner earns a reward (commission) for driving that sale or action.
Affiliate marketing is widely used, with over 80% of brands worldwide relying on it to drive sales. Brands value its low‑risk approach, paying only for confirmed sales or leads alongside the ability to reach broader, more diverse audiences through Awin’s extensive partner network.
Who’s involved?
There are typically three or four parties involved in affiliate marketing:
Advertiser: This is you - an online retailer or brand with a transactional website. Advertisers run affiliate programs for partners to promote their products or services.
Partner: A website owner, blogger or content creator who promotes advertisers’ products via affiliate links and earns a commission on each sale they generate.
Customer: The end consumer who clicks on an affiliate link and completes a purchase on the advertiser’s website.
Affiliate network: This is us, Awin - an intermediary platform that connects advertisers and partners, manages tracking, handles payments, and provides tools and reporting.
How exactly does affiliate marketing work?
The process is straightforward and powered by our tracking technology:
A potential customer visits the partner’s website (blog, social platform, etc.).
The customer clicks an affiliate link - a unique link tied to the partner’s Awin ID.
A cookie is dropped in the customer’s browser to record the click.
The customer is taken to your website where they browse and make a purchase (or perform a qualifying action).
When the purchase or action is confirmed, a tracking pixel fires and registers it.
The partner is credited and awarded a commission.
Each partner on Awin is assigned a unique publisher ID, which is embedded in their tracking links so that every sale can be accurately attributed and commission paid correctly.

How does commission work?
You can use different commission models depending on the goals for your program:
Cost Per Acquisition (CPA)
This is the most common model. The partner earns a commission - either a percentage of the sale value or a fixed amount - each time a customer they referred completes a purchase. You only pay when a transaction is successfully made, making it a cost-effective, performance-driven approach.
Cost Per Lead (CPL)
Instead of a completed purchase, you pay partners for “qualified leads”, such as a completed enquiry form, a callback request, or a brochure download. CPL is especially common in sectors like finance, insurance, and home services.
